There are many tangible benefits for conducting safety training via virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Think about the following:
Learning becomes immersive.
Learning is much safer.
Learning can be more cost-effective.
Learning can be done remotely.
Learners are more engaged.
But there are also challenges — some would call them problems — that come with conducting VR and AR training sessions. Think about:
Participants who wear a headset for a long time might feel sick due to a disconnection between their eyes/brain and their body.
While headsets may have come down in price recently, it’s still expensive to develop extensive and effective VR and AR training.
Successfully implementing such training requires programmers, graphic artists, designers, and many other professionals.
Some older workers might be reluctant to embrace new technology.
So, what are companies doing today to bring real-life experiences from the field, such as digging trenches, into the digital world?
In a recent episode of the True Safety Podcast, I talked with John Dunsmoor about many of these topics (and so much more).
John Dunsmoor is the Director of Business Innovation at Red Rocks Community College (RCCC) in Colorado. He has a fascinating mind. I love his fresh approach to thinking about safety.
In the episode, John and I talk about:
* How, in a way, our competitors in safety training aren’t other safety professionals. Instead, they’re YouTube, Netflix, Amazon prime, etc. In the next few years, the experience of the training itself is going to become even more crucial.
* How the Saudis are investing millions of dollars in virtual reality and 3D mapping to improve safety at their oil refineries.
* The benefits of doing virtual training before you even step foot on a job site.
Safety can change your company but you may have to work on changing the culture of your company first before seeing that happen. If you want help knowing the best ways to improve the quality of your safety program, we’d love to talk with you. You can schedule a call with our team by clicking here.
