How To Create An Effective Safety Incentive Program

Every safety professional knows that our programs can’t just be all regulations and rules, and that we make a massive mistake if we neglect the human side of safety.

If you’re trying to transform a poor safety record, or if you’re trying to maintain a stellar safety culture, every organization—especially construction companies—can benefit from an incentive program.

What are some characteristics of safety incentive programs?

They encourage workers to be involved in not only their own safety but also the safety of others.

They reward proactive behaviors that create a safe working environment.

They do not promote non-reporting of injuries, illnesses, etc.

They are both behavior-based and rates-based.

What are some examples of things safety professionals can incentivize?

Rewarding workers to report injuries, near-misses, hazards, or unsafe conditions.

Rewarding workers for perfect attendance at safety meetings.

Rewarding workers for zero incidents for a month.

Rewarding workers who go above and beyond safe behavior.

Rewarding leaders for initiating root cause investigations.

Rewarding leaders who acknowledge safe acts done by their peers.

You’ll notice that I haven’t given examples of what you can reward employees with. My main suggestion is to get creative and go beyond just giving gift cards. Think outside the box and think big. Ask yourself questions such as:

What “prize” could I give?

Could I donate to someone’s favorite charity on their behalf?

Could I buy someone lunch?

Could I give my top-performing employee some paid time off for their awesome safety behavior?

Also, as a safety leader, what can I do to go above and beyond?

In a recent podcast, I talked extensively about the resilience of teams. I explore what makes some teams strong (or weak), and what makes some teams pull through difficult times (or break apart). In that podcast, I also mention safety incentive programs. Check out the episode: https://youtu.be/9-QVbR2zrJE
